Boss of Bosses, King of All Kings

If you've been following me for a bit, you know I work on my acts of worship. As a result, I'm always on the lookout for things I can use to improve on that department. If you know me, you also know that I'm big on history.

While in Spain, I stumbled across the TV show called Isabel. The series gives us a glimpse of the ruler's life, tribulations and all. In a particular scene, after years of fraternal feud, the nobles come and pledge allegeance to her as their new Queen.

Escapade en Andalousie + news

Salam salam :)

My Trip To Andalucia + News

Hey everyone :)

I guess I'll have to start with the usual apology, I didn't realize I hadn't blogged in so long! It's like time shrunk after Ramadan, I was busy with work, preparing for my trip AND Eid, so as you can imagine, I had a lot on my plate!

And when I returned, a job was sitting here, waiting for me! It's not exactly my dream job, but it's good for now. As much as this is good news, it leaves me with have less time on my hands. There are so many things I want to achieve in such constricted time, why don't days last 30 hours?

Andalucia was on my mind for a while. The culture, the history, everything about it seemed so fascinating to me. I'm not the adventurer type -- at all, y'all --, but the curiosity and passion were so strong, I just wanted to go!

I chose cities which I thought were the most prominent and would give me the best glimpse of Andalucia: Sevilla, Cordoba, and Granada

The trip was beyond all expectations. The exquisite monuments are great testimonies to al-Andalus' rich history. The blend of traditions gave birth to a unique architecture, which serves as the best advocate for multiculturalism. These places ooze inspiration, beauty, and spirit.

I've also enjoyed the local food -- while ditching the pork :) --, the small, narrow streets, the friendly, diverse, authentic people, the laid back vibe...

Andalucia, I'm so grateful for the beautiful experience. Your power is alive and it's real. I've photographed images with my mind and use my heart as a storage device, so you're always with me.

Mes flacons vides

My Empties

Salams everyone!

I hope you all are doing fine, and that you've recovered from you're done with Eid celebrations :) Let's talk beauty! I discovered this new concept, where ladies show their used-up products and review them. It provides better, more thourough reviews, since the products are used to the last drop. After a certain amount of time, you can see how your face/body reacts to them. Also, it allows you to assess the type of consumer you are. I, for instance, have realized I'm big on skin and body care, as a result, spend more on it than on makeup.

These are the emties I've been collecting for a little while. Here goes!

Oatmeal --  I commented on my newly found love a while back, and I'm still in love with this product! I use it in the morning, apply, leave it on for a few minutes, rinse off, still works its magic! I'm all the more happy that it's so cheap and long-lasting, which isn't always the case with conventional face cleansers. I've bought my third pack, I heart it. :)

2014 Ramadan Recap

Salams!

Let me start off wth a big, fat Eid Mubarak! Wish you a blessed and perfect day with your loved ones, filled with good food and love, iA!

So, Ramadan literally flew by, and it's over. I'm a bowl of mixed emotions. I'm both happy and nervious to go back to the regular schedule. I felt emotional at the thought of breaking the fast for the last time last night! May Allah give us the opportunity to experience many more Ramadans iA!

How did the month go for you? It went so smoothly for me, it's amazing. I hardly felt any difficult throughout the days. Some were longer than others, I would feel a bit hungry and weary around iftar time, but nothing major. I wasn't so concerned with the hunger, but more wth the lack of sleep, and how it would reflect on my mood.

Thankfully, I didn't experience the emotional rollercoaster. I'm glad to say that my mood was equal the whole time, which was part of my Ramadan plan :) Speaking of which, I'm happy to report that most of my goals were met! Alhamdulillah, the month was a worry-free, a anxiety-free one! Allah allowed me to keep it cool, calm and positive. The one thing I need to work more on is, concentration. Hopefully, I'll get there by next Ramadan.

Of course, the month was tainted by the sad events ocurring in the Middle East, as well as Burma, the Central African Republic and other places. May Allah SWT ease their burden, liberate them fro the yoke of their oppressors. May He give the victims the highest stations in Jannah, close to Him, SWT. Ameen.

How was your Ramadan?

Bilan Ramadan 2014

1. Rester calme.

5. Me tenir éloignée du fromage.

My 2014 Ramadan Plan

Salams lovelies!

I hope everything's fine with everyone :) Allhamdulillah, I've been doing well, dealing with a hectic schedule. Busy is good though, it's a nice change to be out and about!

Ramadan is right around the corner, so I figured it's about time that I a. come up with a Ramadan Plan, b. share it with you! I find that blogging is great for these Ramadan series of mine: I can document my journey and keep track of everything, that way I know what I've achieved and what I need to work more on.

Enough blabbering, here's a list of a few things I want to focus on this year iA.

1. Letting go of anger. Ahem. I know. My last post is about how I deal with frustration. I guess I need a taste of my own medecine, because I caught myself feeling more irritated that I would like over a few situations. Whether it is justified or not, I want to suppress these feelings even before they come to the surface.

2. Letting go. My mind is constantly racing. A vast imagination can be a good thing. The thing is, I have a tendency to over-analyze and conjecture, which is exhausting, and anxiety-triggering. Morrocans say "relax and learn to swim". This Ramadan, I want to embody the motto, focus on the moment and go with the flow inshaAllah.

3. Seeking knowledge. Of course, the month is a great opportunity for learning. With such a tight schedule, I want to focus on one book. I've had my eyes on Faouzi Skali's Jésus Dans La Tradition Soufie, or Jesus In the Sufi Tradition, for a while, so that will be the perfect time to read it.

4. Keeping it positive. These days, I've found myself dealing with negative feelings, and expressing them -- i.e. complaining :/. Channeling negative energy is mentally draining, and makes a bad situation even worse. This Ramadan, I want to curb that and look out for the silver lining in every cloud :)

5. Giving cheese a break. As silly as it may sound, the French girl in me likes to have her cheese close by, maybe a little too close :). Cheese has many health benefits, but over-indulging isn't good either. This month, I want to curb those cravings.

How I Deal With Anger

Someone cuts in line while you were waiting for hours to pay.
You get pushed around by a rough commuter during rush hour.
Some ignoramus pops out of nowhere to give you a rude comment.

We've all been through this. Anger and frustration are part of our daily lives. You see, yours truly isn't the quiet, calm kind. I'm -- sadly -- much of a hot-headed lady. However, with God's help, I've been able to work on my character and calm me nerves! Here are a few tips that have helped me.

1. It's okay to be mad. We all have some sense of what's right and wrong. So naturally, we feel frustration in the face of injustice. The problem happens when we voice our frustration in ways that are displeasing to Allah and could bring us trouble.

2. It's kind of a good thing. Being upset is usually a good indication of people's state. We tend to think that aggressive, loud people are not, but I see them as being emotional. This tenderheartness just needs to be redirected towards something positive.

3. Don't let the dunya fool you. Society/the madia tends to portray aggressive people as self-reliant and strong. We've seen countless movies revolving around a guy trying to avenge his daughter's/son's/wife's brutal death. We're always reminded that "nice guys finish last", "it's a dog-eat-dog world", "survival of the fittest"...
If we don't act "hard", we're weak and submissive. Our tradition taught us that true strenght is self-control, and aggresiveness is weakness. Our beloved Prophet said: "The strong man is not the one who can throw another down. The strong man is the one who can keep hold of himself when he is angry".

4. Don't let your nafs rule. In a argument, outwardly, it may seem like one person is opposing anther. This is not entirely accurate, it's you versus your nafs. If you give in to anger, you're surrendering to your urges. Human beings have lower desires, they must be controlled and channeled. You ride the horse, the horse does not ride you.

5. How should I act in a tense situation? An important thing for me is to remain silent. Do not speak! Leave the place of the argument if you can. Go make wudhu, as anger is from Shaytan and water will extinguish its flames.

OOTD -- Clean & Simple

Salams :)

Long time, no OOTD, I know... I am about to correct it now :)

So, if you know me, you know I'm a plain-jane, blue-jeans-white-tee kinda gal. The day I wore this outfit, France was getting sunnier and warmer, but not to the point where I could leave the house with summer clothing.

I had this new sweater that I bought during the winter sales. I fell in love with the knitting pattern, the loose cut, and the interesting collar.

I wanted to pull out my long-forgotten Maysaa straight-lined skirt. To add some dimension and coolness to the look, I layered my woodcutter-inspired shirt, popped the collar and rolled up the sleeves. Paired with the sweater, it provided that casual, modest silhouette I wanted -- doesn't it remind you of something? I threw on a jean jacket, for structure and warmth.

Since I had to run a few errands, I opted for my loafer-inspired flats. For a bag, I chose this velvet-y/leather-y bag to compliment the brown tones of the look.

As for hijab, I turbaned it up, using this bun headwrap technique.

Ca vient d'où, tout ça ?

L'effondrement de l'usine au Bangladesh. La valse Scarlett Johansson/Oxfam/SodaStream. L'affaire BBR.

Girl, Where'd You Get That From?

The Bangladesh factory collapse. The Scarlet/Oxfam/SodaStream situation. The L'Oreal BBR affair. Ringing any bells?

These events perfectly illustrate the dilemma I'm facing. Lately, I've been thinking about the beauty products I buy. Who is making them? Under which circumstances? Are the employees manufacturing my product working in good conditions? Do they get the minimum wage?

What about the brand? Do they really care about their workforce? Their customers? Where does their money come from? Where is it going?

What's the real cost of beauty?

Do I even care? The answer is, yes. I do care. I want the people making whatever products I put on myself to be treated well. I don't want to give money to companies for them to support causes I oppose. I don't want companies putting derogatory/negative messages out there to thrive.

Otherwise, I'll end up with a product devoid of baraka, that might bring more harm than good. Sure, I'll look good. But at what expense?

Battle of the Soaps

*Post originally written in April 2013

Salams :)

Please excuse the rather adventurous title, I couldn't  help myself :)

As you might have noticed, I blog more and more about beauty these days. I guess I wanted a break from my run-of-the-mill, boring OOTDs -- which I'm going to return to soon, iA. Also, some brands I decided to put aside, and I had to find remplacements for them, so that means more testing.

Among products, I developed an interest -- more like obsession -- with soaps. Then, I discovered exfoliating soaps. What's better than a 3-in-1 product that leave your skin clean, soft and exfoliated? A few products caught my attention, I tried them out and wanted to share my experiment with you :)

 The three fiends!

Bienvenue + Coup de coeur musical

Salam :)

Because I'm HAPPYYY

News + Musical Crush

HEY EVERYONE :)

As I had mentioned earlier, I've been MIA for a little while. I was studying for an employment test -- a serious, grown-up typa thing. On test day, we were about 300 people for just a few positions, we'll see what Allah makes.

Now that I'm done with it, I can come back to blogging. Let me tell you, it feels great! The absence made me realize that it has slowly but surely become my thing. :)

Noticed anything about the blog? It's been revamped! I hope you'll enjoy the clean layout as mush as I do. Feel free to use the toolbar and/or the search tool, to find exactly what you need. Also, I've added the About and FAQ for those who wanted to ax about me ;). Something else I've super excited about: the French-speaking sisters can now have access to content through the Cocorico ! section, inshaAllah.

By the way, happy belated 2014 :) May you get all you aspire to, and more inshaAllah! I don't know about you, but I've found a great way to start the year, that is, with music! Just because I was cramming for my test doesn't mean I've neglected my musical urges. In between studying sessions, I've found great, inspiring, uplifting music to keep me motivated for the whole year. Here goes!

This one, I'm sure you've heard before. It's produced and perfomed by music's whiz kid Pharrell. The song is bubbly, and fresh, the video is great -- made by two fellow Frenchmen, in case you didn't know, we are taking  over the world! Any guesses?

Musical Crush

Hey everyone=)

MsDieynaba here, with another music-related post.

This is Mademoiselle K and Zazie's song, Me Taire, Te Plaire. I stumbled across this video the other day, I loved it right away! Interestingly enough, I didn't care that much for these artists before, although they're renowned here. Allah is teaching me a lesson: do not think you know when you don't. I'm currently broadening my scope=)

Also, I finally decided to check out Yuna's music. Indonesians seem to be crazy about her, whether it's her music, her style, and I can see why=) Fashion-wise, Yuna's an inspiration for hijabis like me, that are young and willing to keep their look cute, modern and modest.

Same with her music, I know I'm late on that, but the music's good, it's very romantic, soothing.

Love the sadness in that song

Good cover of Nirvana's song!
